There are so many gnats outside because they thrive in warm, humid, and moist environments. Gnats are attracted to areas with standing water, over-watered plants, compost piles, trash bins, decaying organic matter, and damp soil. These conditions provide ideal breeding grounds, especially in the spring and summer when the weather is warmer and moisture is more prevalent. Moisture sources such as puddles, birdbaths, clogged gutters, pet water bowls, and dense mulch further promote gnat infestations. They are particularly common around yards with high moisture and decaying materials where they can lay eggs and feed on organic matter. This is why gnats can appear in large numbers outdoors during these conditions.
