The Buffalo Bills are named after the American frontiersman and showman William Frederick "Buffalo Bill" Cody. The name originates from a Buffalo football team in the All-America Football Conference in the 1940s, which initially was called the Bisons, but changed to the Bills after a public naming contest. The winning entry compared the team to a band of "Buffalo Bills," referring to Cody, who was famous for hunting thousands of buffalo and for his Wild West shows. When the current Buffalo Bills team was founded in 1960, the new owner Ralph Wilson adopted the same name to honor the frontier spirit associated with Buffalo Bill Cody.
