Charlie Sheen changed his name from his birth name, Carlos Estevez, to honor his father Martin Sheen's stage name and to make a fresh start professionally. He explained in his memoir that after getting his father's blessing, he liked the way "Sheen" looked and sounded, and it allowed him to distance himself from past academic and athletic struggles associated with the Estevez name. His father, born Ramón Estevez, had changed his own name to Martin Sheen in the 1950s to overcome industry prejudice and to have a name that would be more appealing for acting roles. Charlie's brother Emilio Estevez chose to keep the family name Estevez, influenced by their father's regret over changing his own name. Charlie Sheen has also used his birth name Carlos Estevez at times, notably for roles that connect to his Latino heritage, such as in the film Machete Kills.
