Martin Sheen was born Ramón Gerard Antonio Estévez. He changed his name to Martin Sheen when he began acting to help him gain acting parts. He chose the stage name by combining the last name of a CBS casting director, Robert Dale Martin, who gave him his first big break, and the last name of Catholic archbishop and broadcaster Fulton J. Sheen. He explained that whenever he gave his real name, there was hesitation, and appointments or jobs would disappear, so he invented the name Martin Sheen to avoid these problems. Although he started making a living with the name, he never officially changed it and kept Estevez on his legal documents. He has expressed some regret for not keeping his original name, knowing it bothered his father.
