Cats throw up for various reasons, most commonly due to gastric irritation. This can happen if they eat too much or too fast, have hairballs from grooming, eat something they shouldn't like grass or spoiled food, or have an upset stomach. Vomiting can also be caused by more serious issues such as kidney disease, hyperthyroidism, infections, parasites, toxins, or intestinal blockages. Sometimes, vomiting results from eating indigestible objects or reacting to medication. Vomiting is the stomach forcefully expelling its contents, often accompanied by neck extension and gagging, and can be a sign the cat's body is trying to get rid of something harmful or irritating. Occasional vomiting is common, especially in kittens or long-haired cats, but frequent or severe vomiting may require veterinary attention.
