Dogs get "zoomies," also known as frenetic random activity periods (FRAPs), as a way to release built-up excess energy, excitement, or stress. This behavior often occurs after confinement, stressful events like baths or vet visits, play sessions, or when they are overtired or overstimulated. Puppies, in particular, exhibit zoomies more often because they have high energy levels and less ability to regulate emotions. Zoomies help dogs physically release energy, express playfulness, and reduce nervous tension in a joyful and instinctual way. While zoomies can look chaotic, they are a normal, healthy behavior for dogs to blow off steam and have fun.
