Flying termites suddenly appear primarily due to swarming behavior, which is part of their reproductive cycle. When a termite colony matures and reaches a certain size, usually after warm, humid weather or rain, winged reproductive termites (called alates or swarmers) emerge en masse to mate and establish new colonies. They are attracted to light and often fly near windows and doors. This sudden emergence can seem like they appear out of nowhere but signals that there is a mature termite colony nearby, sometimes hidden in or around a home. After mating, termites shed their wings and seek suitable places to start new colonies, making the presence of flying termites a sign to check for possible infestations.
