LSU has yard markers every five yards on its football field as a tradition that dates back to 1946. This practice started because a legendary LSU radio announcer, John Ferguson, wanted to make his job easier during broadcasts. Since many LSU home games were played at night, having numbers painted every five yards helped the announcer more easily spot and call the action on the field as the ball advanced. This is unique among major college football stadiums, as most fields only mark every 10 yards. The origin and continuation of this five-yard marking tradition were initiated by LSU's Sports Information Director Jim Corbett and have become a distinctive feature of Tiger Stadium.
