LSU wears white jerseys at home due to a unique tradition that started in 1958. Former LSU head coach Paul Dietzel introduced this custom when he decided the team should wear white at home, believing the white uniforms looked sharper and more distinctive. That year, LSU won its first national championship while wearing white at home, which solidified the tradition. Although the NCAA later imposed rules forcing teams to wear dark jerseys at home starting in 1983, LSU fans strongly associated white jerseys with luck and tradition. After persistent lobbying by Coach Gerry DiNardo, the NCAA granted LSU permission to resume wearing white jerseys at home starting in 1995. Since then, LSU has mostly retained the tradition of white home jerseys, except for a few rare exceptions. The tradition is deeply rooted in LSU's football culture and superstition linked to their historic success in white uniforms.
