Your jaw keeps locking likely due to issues with the temporomandibular joint (TMJ), which connects your lower jaw to your skull. Causes can include TMJ disorders that affect jaw movement by inflammation or injury to the joint or its cartilage, muscle strain or spasms, injury from clenching or grinding teeth (bruxism), a bad bite causing misalignment, or temporary dislocation of the joint. Symptoms often include jaw pain, stiffness, clicking or popping sounds, and difficulty opening or closing the mouth fully. Less common causes can be serious infections like tetanus or trauma to the jaw area. Treatment often involves physical therapy, bite splints, muscle relaxants, or addressing underlying dental issues.
