Derrick Groves is in jail because he was convicted of two counts of second- degree murder related to a 2018 Mardi Gras Day shooting, in which he opened fire with assault rifles at a family gathering, killing two people and wounding several others. He was sentenced in 2024 to life in prison without the possibility of parole. Additionally, he pleaded guilty to two counts of manslaughter and faced a pending sentence when he escaped from the Orleans Justice Center in New Orleans in May 2025. Groves was the last of ten inmates who escaped but was captured in Atlanta after nearly five months on the run. He is now back in custody and likely to face further charges for the escape and additional penalties beyond his original sentence.
