Patrick Mahomes is not playing today because he just suffered a serious knee injury and is out for the rest of the season.
What happened
Late in the fourth quarter of the Chiefs’ Week 15 game against the Los Angeles Chargers, Mahomes injured his left knee when he was tackled and went down grabbing it in clear pain. Team evaluations, including an MRI, confirmed that he tore the ACL in his left knee, which is a season-ending injury for most players.
Current status
The Chiefs have ruled Mahomes out for the remainder of the 2025 season, and he and the team are now considering surgical options and a long rehab process. Because this injury happened late in the year, there is also concern that his recovery could affect at least part of the 2026 season, so the team has turned to backup Gardner Minshew at quarterback for now.
