A dryer may not be getting hot due to several common reasons:
- A blocked or clogged vent or lint screen can restrict airflow, causing the dryer to overheat and shut off heating or to not heat properly at all.
- Insufficient power supply may cause electric dryers to run without heating if one voltage line is damaged or if the circuit breaker is tripped. Gas dryers won't heat if the gas valve is off or there is no gas flow.
- A faulty heating element is a frequent cause of no heat; it can be tested for continuity with an ohmmeter.
- A blown thermal fuse, which prevents overheating, can disable heating even though the dryer runs.
- Defective thermostats, bad timer/control board, or faulty sensors can cause the dryer to not maintain or produce heat.
- Improper dryer settings such as "cool" or "eco" mode also result in no heating.
It is recommended to check and clean the vent and lint filter, ensure proper power supply and gas flow (if gas dryer), test the heating element and thermal fuse, and verify dryer settings. Some repairs may require professional service due to electrical or gas hazards.
