Green poop is usually caused by eating a large amount of green leafy vegetables like spinach, kale, or broccoli, which contain chlorophyll, the green pigment in plants. It can also be due to consuming artificially colored foods or drinks with green or blue dyes. Another common reason is if food moves too quickly through the intestines, such as with diarrhea, preventing bile (which is naturally greenish-yellow) from being broken down fully, leading to green stool. Other possible causes include antibiotic use, changes in gut bacteria, certain medications, infections from bacteria or viruses like Salmonella or norovirus, and sometimes medical conditions affecting bile flow. Typically, green poop is harmless if it is occasional and there are no other symptoms. However, persistent green stool with other symptoms may require consulting a doctor.
