Assata Shakur was wanted primarily for her alleged involvement in a range of criminal activities including the 1973 shooting and killing of New Jersey State Trooper Werner Foerster during a traffic stop, several bank robberies, and associations with the Black Liberation Army (BLA), which the FBI accused of carrying out murders and armed robberies. She was also implicated in "execution style" murders of New York City police officers in the early 1970s and other violent crimes. Despite these accusations, Shakur and her supporters have claimed that she was targeted by law enforcement due to her political activism and involvement in Black liberation movements, and that she was framed in many cases. She was convicted in 1977 for the murder of the state trooper but maintained her innocence, stating she was unarmed with her hands raised during the confrontation. After escaping prison in 1979 with outside help, Shakur fled to Cuba, where she was granted political asylum. The FBI placed her on its Most Wanted Terrorists list in 2013, making her the first woman to be listed, with a $2 million reward for her capture. She remained in Cuba until her death in 2025.
