Bill Clinton was impeached primarily because he lied under oath (perjury) and obstructed justice during a civil lawsuit involving sexual harassment claims by Paula Jones. The impeachment stemmed from Clinton's denial under oath of an extramarital affair with Monica Lewinsky, a White House intern, which was contradicted by evidence and witness testimony. The House of Representatives passed two articles of impeachment against him: one for perjury to a grand jury and another for obstruction of justice in covering up the affair. However, the Senate acquitted him, so he was not removed from office.
