Jeffrey Epstein was in jail because he was arrested and charged with sex trafficking of minors. He was accused of sexually abusing and trafficking dozens of underage girls, some as young as 14, from around 2002 to 2005. Epstein faced federal charges of sex trafficking and conspiracy to traffic minors for sex in Florida and New York in 2019. He had previously been convicted in 2008 of procuring a child for prostitution and soliciting a prostitute, for which he served about 13 months in jail with work release. At the time of his 2019 arrest, he was held at the Metropolitan Correctional Center in New York City awaiting trial on these new charges but died by suicide in his jail cell in August 2019 before the trial could occur.
