Roseanne Barr was fired and her show "Roseanne" was abruptly canceled by ABC in May 2018 after she posted a racist tweet about Valerie Jarrett, a Black woman who was a senior advisor to former President Barack Obama. In the tweet, Barr suggested that Jarrett was the offspring of the "Muslim Brotherhood & Planet of the Apes," which was widely condemned as racist. Although Barr later apologized and blamed the tweet on being under the influence of the sleeping pill Ambien, ABC's entertainment president called the tweet "abhorrent, repugnant, and inconsistent with our values," leading to the immediate cancellation of the show despite its strong ratings and financial success. The decision was supported by senior executives at ABC and Disney, who felt there was no other option given the severity of the remarks. Following the cancellation, the show was retooled as "The Conners" without Barr's involvement.
