The caravel was an important development in navigation because it was a fast, agile, and durable ship that could sail closer to the wind, thanks to its unique triangular lateen sails. This capability allowed it to navigate more effectively in a wider range of wind conditions, including sailing windward (against the wind), which was not possible with earlier ships. Its smaller size and shallow keel made it highly maneuverable in coastal and shallow waters, ideal for exploration of unknown coastlines and rivers. Additionally, the caravel had a larger cargo capacity relative to its size, enabling longer voyages with more supplies and goods. These features made it the perfect ship for the Age of Exploration, greatly enhancing European sailors' ability to travel further and explore more safely and efficiently.
