There was no World Series in 1904 because the New York Giants, the National League champions, refused to play against the American League champions, the Boston Americans (now the Boston Red Sox). At that time, there was no formal agreement or governing body that required the World Series to be played annually. The Giants' owner John T. Brush and manager John McGraw considered the American League an inferior league and saw the World Series as an exhibition rather than a legitimate championship. McGraw even claimed his team was already "world champions" as they were champions of the "only real major league." This refusal to participate led to the cancellation of the 1904 World Series despite Boston winning the American League pennant. The animosity and rivalry between the leagues, especially between the Giants and the New York Highlanders (later Yankees), also played a significant role in the Giants' decision not to compete.
