For a 1-month-old infant, the CPR to initiate is infant CPR. This consists of:
- Placing the infant on their back on a firm surface.
- Using two fingers on the lower half of the breastbone in the middle of the chest.
- Compressing the chest about one-third its depth (around 1.5 inches or 4 cm) at a rate of 100 to 120 compressions per minute.
- Giving 30 compressions followed by 2 rescue breaths (mouth-to-mouth-and-nose), with the head tilted back slightly to open the airway.
- Continuing cycles of 30 compressions to 2 breaths until the infant recovers, help arrives, or CPR is no longer possible.
This method is tailored for infants under 1 year old and is different from the CPR for older children or adults.
