Amoxicillin and clavulanic acid (clavulansäure) are combined as an antibiotic treatment used to fight bacterial infections that are resistant to amoxicillin alone. Amoxicillin is a broad-spectrum penicillin antibiotic that kills bacteria, while clavulanic acid inhibits enzymes (beta-lactamases) produced by some bacteria that would otherwise make amoxicillin ineffective. This combination extends the effectiveness of amoxicillin against resistant bacteria. This combination is commonly used to treat infections such as sinusitis, middle ear infections, respiratory tract infections, urinary tract infections, skin and soft tissue infections, and bone and joint infections. It comes in forms like tablets or oral suspension and is usually taken 2-3 times per day with meals for about 5-7 days, or longer for severe infections. Common side effects include diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, skin rash, and yeast infections. Serious but less common side effects include severe allergic reactions, severe skin reactions, and liver issues such as cholestatic jaundice. Patients are advised to stop taking the medication and seek immediate medical help if they experience serious allergic symptoms or severe skin reactions.
