can cats eat potato

Cats can eat potatoes only when they are cooked properly and served plain. Raw potatoes, potato skins, and any part of the potato plant contain solanine, a toxic substance that is poisonous to cats. Cooked potatoes should be peeled, free of seasonings, fats, salt, and spices, and given only in very small amounts as an occasional treat. Potatoes are not nutritionally necessary for cats since they are obligate carnivores and obtain all essential nutrients from meat. Feeding potatoes in excess or inappropriately (such as fried, mashed with dairy or seasonings, or raw) can cause digestive upset or toxicity in cats.
