The phalanges are classified as long bones. They are the bones that make up the fingers and toes, with each digit (except the thumb and big toe) having three phalanges: proximal, middle, and distal. The thumb and big toe have only two phalanges each. Despite their small size, their structure, which includes a shaft, proximal base, and distal head, qualifies them as long bones.
