Patrick Mahomes is not playing because he just suffered a serious knee injury. The Kansas City Chiefs have ruled him out for the rest of the 2025 season.
What happened
Late in the Chiefs’ Week 15 game against the Los Angeles Chargers, Mahomes’ left knee twisted awkwardly on a scramble and he had to be helped off the field and taken to the locker room. Medical evaluation after the game showed significant damage to the knee, and he did not return to action that day.
Current diagnosis and timeline
An MRI confirmed that Mahomes tore the ACL in his left knee, and the team has announced that he will miss the remainder of the season while he and the organization decide on surgical options. Typical recovery from an ACL tear is around 9–12 months, so his availability for next preseason and even the start of the 2026 season is uncertain.
