Freckles are a type of hyperpigmentation. They form as a result of overproduction of melanin, which is responsible for skin and hair color. Freckles are neither good nor bad, and they do not have known health benefits. They are neutral and are entirely subjective, whether perceived as positive or negative. Freckles can be lightened or removed by pursuing freckle-removal technology, such as laser treatment. However, staying out of the sun is the only effective way to fade and/or remove freckles. There are several different kinds of chemical peels, and a medium-level peel should result in lightening or removing those spots. Topical solutions for hyperpigmentation typically work to interrupt the pathways where pigment is produced in the melanocyte cells, mostly inhibiting an enzyme called tyrosinase, which can limit the production of melanin. Some ingredients that can help with hyperpigmentation include alpha hydroxyl acids, apple cider vinegar, and turmeric.
