Cats can drink salt water and survive because their kidneys are biologically capable of processing salt water by secreting excessive sodium, allowing the water to hydrate them. However, this ability works within limits—excessive intake of salt water can lead to dehydration and salt poisoning, which can cause symptoms like vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, seizures, and even death. It is best to provide cats with fresh, clean water and a species-appropriate diet to keep them healthy. Drinking salt water should only happen occasionally or in survival situations, and continuous consumption is not recommended. If a cat drinks salt water frequently or shows symptoms of illness afterward, veterinary care should be sought.
