Dogs should generally not eat ketchup. While the main ingredient in ketchup, tomatoes, is not toxic to dogs, most commercial ketchups contain harmful ingredients such as garlic powder and onion powder, which can damage dogs' red blood cells and cause anemia. Additionally, ketchup often has high levels of sugar, salt, and sometimes xylitol (a sugar substitute that is extremely toxic to dogs), making it unhealthy and potentially dangerous. Occasional accidental licks are usually not harmful, but it's best to avoid feeding ketchup to dogs intentionally. If a dog consumes a significant amount of ketchup, symptoms like lethargy, loss of appetite, vomiting, diarrhea, or red urine may occur, and veterinary advice should be sought immediately.
