Captain Elizabeth (Lizzie) Godwin was a trailblazing British Army officer, the first female officer to commission into The Life Guards, the senior regiment of the Household Cavalry, since its formation in 1661. She joined in 2020 after winning the Sword of Honour as the best cadet of her intake at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst. Godwin was recognized for her leadership, resourcefulness, and compassion. She served in prestigious ceremonial roles, including riding in the funeral procession of Queen Elizabeth II and the coronation of King Charles III, and she also took part in military exercises and training missions abroad. Tragically, Captain Godwin died in a car crash in Surrey on September 5, 2025, at the age of 28. At the time, she was serving at the Army Training Regiment in Pirbright. She is remembered as a talented and dedicated soldier who inspired others and paved the way for women in one of the British Army's most elite units. Her impact was widely honored by her regiment and the military community.
