Coconut oil has been known to help dogs with itchy, dry skin, hot spots, bites, and stings. It contains capric acid and caprylic acid, which are known for their anti-fungal effects, and other acids that are polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fatty acids. Coconut oil is also rich in medium-chain fatty acids, or medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs), including lauric acid, capric acid, and caprylic acid. MCTs are quickly metabolized to provide energy and can aid in digestion and help heal digestive disorders, as well as improve brain energy and mental function in older dogs. Coconut oil has anti-inflammatory, anti-fungal, and anti-bacterial properties, and the lauric acid is also supposed to fight off viruses.

While coconut oil is generally safe for dogs, it is important to start small when feeding your pup anything new, especially coconut oil, which dogs may gobble up without proper supervision. Unrefined coconut oil, or virgin coconut oil, is best for dogs. To use coconut oil topically, apply it to the skin about once a week, and let it be absorbed for a few minutes. After five minutes or so, rinse your dog off.
