Contrave is a medication used for chronic weight management in adults with an initial body mass index (BMI) of 30 kg/m² or greater (obese) or 27 kg/m² or greater (overweight) with at least one weight-related medical condition such as high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, or high cholesterol. The medication contains two active ingredients, naltrexone HCl and bupropion HCl, and works on two areas of the brain to help reduce hunger and control cravings.
During the first week of treatment with Contrave, some people may experience mild side effects such as nausea, vomiting, headache, dizziness, insomnia, dry mouth, diarrhea, constipation, hot flashes, increased sweating, flushing, and strange taste in the mouth. These side effects may go away within a few days or a couple of weeks, but if they become more severe or dont go away, it is recommended to talk with a doctor or pharmacist.
Serious side effects from Contrave are not common, but they can occur. These include increased blood pressure or heart rate, seizures, liver problems, risk of suicidal thoughts and behaviors, and severe allergic reaction. If any of these serious side effects occur, it is important to call a doctor right away or seek emergency medical attention if symptoms feel life-threatening or if there is a medical emergency.
It is important to note that Contrave may interact with other medications, and it is recommended to keep a list of all the products used, including prescription/nonprescription drugs and herbal products, and share it with a doctor and pharmacist.
