Elim Chan is a highly acclaimed conductor known for her wide-ranging repertory spanning from the Classical period to contemporary works. Born in 1986 in Hong Kong, she studied in the United States and has gained international recognition as a conductor. Since 2019, she has been the chief conductor of the Antwerp Symphony Orchestra and was principal guest conductor of the Royal Scottish National Orchestra from 2018 to 2023. She has worked with many renowned orchestras globally, including the Boston Symphony Orchestra, Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Los Angeles Philharmonic, and many others. Chan is noted for her precise, economical conducting style and sensitive ear, and she became the first woman to win the Donatella Flick Conducting Competition in 2014. Her career highlights include debuts and collaborations with top orchestras worldwide, a three-part portrait series dedicated to her by the Vienna Musikverein, and a three-year collaboration with the Orquesta Sinfónica de Castilla y León focusing on Stravinsky’s ballets. She studied at Smith College and the University of Michigan and honed her skills through assistant and fellowship programs with prestigious orchestras and masterclasses with Bernard Haitink.
