Eyeliner tattooing is a form of cosmetic tattooing that is done by a trained technician using a pigment that is different from body tattooing ink and is only deposited on the first layer of skin. The pigment is designed to fade over time, hence the term ‘semi-permanent’. Eyeliner tattooing can be beneficial for individuals with busy lifestyles who tend to wear eyeliner every day, who desire thicker looking lashes, and/or those with oily skin that leads to constant smearing and smudging throughout the day.
Before getting an eyeliner tattoo, it is important to follow pre-care instructions to ensure the best possible results and longevity of the tattoo. This includes avoiding the use of anti-aging, skin brightening, or anti-acne skincare products, particularly those that contain Alpha Hydroxy (AHA), Vitamin A, or Retinol, for 30 days prior to the appointment. It is also recommended to discontinue the use of Fish Oil, Vitamin C, Glucosamine, Evening Primrose Oil, Ginger, and Ginko one week prior to the appointment as they thin the blood and prevent the pigment from implanting correctly.
During the procedure, a numbing cream is applied to the eyes to minimize pain. The process can take 2-3 hours. After the procedure, it is important to follow post-care instructions to ensure proper healing and avoid infection. This includes avoiding the use of skincare products that contain Alpha Hydroxy (AHA), Vitamin A, or Retinol, and avoiding exposure to sun, water, and sweat for a few days.
While eyeliner tattooing can be beneficial, there are also risks to be aware of, including infection, poor hygiene, or not following post-procedure advice. It is important to choose a highly experienced technician who is licensed, professional, and focused on the clients needs and comfort.
