Fast & Furious 4, also known simply as Fast & Furious, is a 2009 action film directed by Justin Lin and written by Chris Morgan. It is the fourth installment in the Fast & Furious franchise and acts as a direct sequel to the first two films, The Fast and the Furious (2001) and 2 Fast 2 Furious (2003). The film stars Vin Diesel as Dominic Toretto, Paul Walker as Brian O'Conner, Michelle Rodriguez, and Jordana Brewster. The plot centers around Dominic Toretto and his crew, who are involved in hijacking fuel tankers in the Dominican Republic. When Letty Ortiz, Dom's girlfriend, is murdered, Dom returns to Los Angeles to avenge her death. Meanwhile, FBI agent Brian O'Conner is working undercover to bring down a drug lord, Arturo Braga. Dom and Brian end up working together to take down Braga's heroin trafficking operation. The film includes intense street racing, undercover operations, betrayals, and high-stakes action, culminating in a dramatic final showdown and setting up the franchise for its next chapter. Fast & Furious 4 was filmed in Los Angeles and the Dominican Republic, premiered in March 2009, and was released in April 2009 by Universal Pictures. Despite mixed reviews criticizing the script, it was lauded for its action sequences and became the highest-grossing film in the franchise at its release, earning $360.4 million worldwide. It laid the foundation for the continuing Fast & Furious saga, followed by Fast Five in 2011.
