Finasteride is a medication used to treat male pattern hair loss and benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) . However, it has been reported to cause sexual side effects, including decreased sexual desire, erectile dysfunction, problems with ejaculation (including decreased volume of ejaculate), and pain in the testicles. These effects occurred early in therapy and returned to normal on stopping or over time on continuous use of the drug. A number of studies have looked at the problem of side effects caused by finasteride, and they reveal that sexual adverse effects occur at rates of 2.1% to 3.8% . Finasteride increased sexual dysfunction only slightly even at 5 mg dosage (which is much higher than the 1 mg administered in pattern hair loss) and its impact diminished over time. However, altered sexual functions such as erectile dysfunction and diminished libido are reported by a subset of men receiving finasteride, raising the possibility of a causal relationship. If any of these side effects last or get worse, it is important to notify a doctor or pharmacist promptly.
It is important to note that finasteride may decrease fertility in men, and decreased sexual desire, ejaculation problems, and inability to have or maintain an erection may occur during and after treatment. Finasteride is not indicated for use in the pediatric population, and safety and efficacy have not been established. Women and children should not use this medication.
In general, sexual side effects from finasteride are rare and typically subside with cessation. Some common ways to reduce finasteride side effects in men include following the prescribed dosage, taking the medicine at the same time every day, or taking a lower dosage. If side effects persist, it is important to talk to a healthcare provider to learn about other options.
