The first product launched by Maybelline was Lash-Brow-Ine, a mixture of Vaseline and coal dust that was adapted by Thomas Lyle Williams with a chemistry set and produced a product sold locally called Lash-Brow-Ine. It was advertised as an “ideal, harmless preparation for darkening eyelashes and eyebrows”. The product was sold in a small box with a rectangular cake of product stamped with the name Maybelline, a small bristle brush, and a mirror attached to the inside of the lid.
