The state of Alaska was purchased from the Russian Empire by the United States in 1867. The purchase price was $7.2 million, and it added about 586,412 square miles of territory to the U.S. This transaction is known as the Alaska Purchase. The treaty for the sale was signed on March 30, 1867, and the U.S. Senate ratified it on May 15 of the same year. American sovereignty over Alaska became legally effective on October 18, 1867. This purchase is sometimes referred to as "Seward's Folly" or "Seward's Icebox" after the U.S. Secretary of State William H. Seward who negotiated the deal with Russian diplomat Eduard de Stoeckl on behalf of Russia, under Tsar Alexander II.
