Adolf Hitler died by suicide on April 30, 1945, in his underground bunker beneath the Reich Chancellery in Berlin. Facing defeat as Soviet troops closed in on the city, Hitler shot himself in the head. He did this shortly after marrying his longtime partner Eva Braun, who also took her own life by ingesting poison. Following their deaths, their bodies were carried out of the bunker, doused with gasoline, and set on fire as per Hitler's instructions to avoid capture.
