John F. Kennedy, the 35th president of the United States, was assassinated on November 22, 1963, in Dallas, Texas. He was fatally shot while riding in a presidential motorcade through Dealey Plaza. The shots were fired from the nearby Texas School Book Depository by Lee Harvey Oswald, a former U.S. Marine. Kennedy was struck by two bullets: one entered his upper back and exited through his throat, and the second, the fatal shot, struck the back of his head. He was rushed to Parkland Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead about 30 minutes after the shooting. Vice President Lyndon B. Johnson was sworn in as president shortly after Kennedy's death aboard Air Force One.
