Ed Gein got caught after the disappearance of Bernice Worden, a local hardware store owner. Worden's son became suspicious when he found shell casings and blood at their store, along with a receipt for antifreeze in Gein's name. When law enforcement searched Gein's farm in 1957, they discovered Worden's decapitated and mutilated body in his shed. They also found human remains, including skulls, body parts, and items made of human skin, such as masks and lampshades. This evidence linked Gein to Worden's murder and to grave robbing from local cemeteries. Gein was arrested, initially denied the crimes but later confessed to killing Worden and another woman, Mary Hogan. He was found mentally unfit for trial at first and institutionalized.
