At 3 months old, a baby can typically see objects clearly within 8 to 12 inches (20 to 30 cm) from their face, which is roughly the distance from their eyes to the face of a person holding them. At this stage, their vision is developing so they start to focus better on faces and close objects, track moving objects with their eyes, and coordinate eye movements more effectively. They can begin to follow or reach for objects and distinguish facial expressions, though their distance vision beyond this close range is still limited and blurry. Their color vision is also emerging, and they are particularly attracted to high-contrast colors like black, white, and red.
