Skunks can spray their foul-smelling defensive liquid up to about 10 to 15 feet (3 to 5 meters) with remarkable accuracy. They may also release a mist that can travel even farther, requiring a safe distance if encountered. The spray is a sulfur-based chemical mixture that causes intense odor and eye irritation. Skunks usually give warning signs before spraying and can spray multiple times in quick succession but need about a week to replenish their spray supply after use. This spray distance allows skunks to effectively deter threats without engaging physically.
