The Global Sumud Flotilla was reported to be approximately 70 to 85 nautical miles (about 130 to 157 kilometers) from the coast of Gaza when intercepted by Israeli naval forces. At one point, it was around 121 nautical miles (225 kilometers) away before nearing the blockade area. Some boats were intercepted at about 70 nautical miles, while others reportedly got as close as 46 nautical miles (85 km) from Gaza's shores. Israeli authorities have prevented the flotilla from reaching Gaza, and many vessels were taken control of or towed away near that distance range.
