The shot that fatally wounded Charlie Kirk was fired from the roof of the Losee Center at Utah Valley University, approximately 200 yards (about 180 meters) away from where Kirk was speaking at an outdoor event. This distance is within the effective range of most firearms and was described as a considerable distance from the location where he was positioned addressing a crowd of about 3,000 people. The bullet struck him in the neck, causing fatal injuries.
