Minnesota Vikings quarterback J.J. McCarthy is out with a high ankle sprain sustained in Week 2 of the 2025 season. The medical staff has projected a four-to-six week recovery period. As of early October 2025, McCarthy has missed at least three consecutive games and has not yet returned to practice in any capacity. Coach Kevin O'Connell has been clear that McCarthy will not play until he has completed a full week of practice. Given the bye week in Week 6, the earliest likely return for McCarthy would be Week 7, but it could extend to Weeks 8 or 9 if his recovery takes longer. McCarthy has not participated in any practices so far, and the Vikings are cautious about rushing him back to play.
