A rainbow traditionally has 7 distinct colors: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet. This sequence is often remembered using the mnemonic "ROYGBIV" and dates back to Isaac Newton's division of the spectrum into seven colors to match the musical scale. Although a rainbow is actually a continuous spectrum with infinite colors, these seven are the main colors visible to the human eye in a rainbow.
