On September 11, 2001, a total of 2,977 people lost their lives due to the terrorist attacks, excluding the 19 hijackers. This includes 2,753 deaths at the World Trade Center in New York City—with 343 of those being firefighters—the deaths of 184 people at the Pentagon, and 40 individuals who died near Shanksville, Pennsylvania when United Airlines Flight 93 crashed. All 246 passengers and crew aboard the four hijacked planes also perished. The victims ranged widely in age and nationality, and the attacks represented one of the deadliest terrorist acts in history.
