Martin Luther King Jr.'s funeral, held on April 9, 1968, in Atlanta, Georgia, was attended by approximately 150,000 people in the streets of downtown Atlanta. In addition, some 1,300 mourners were inside Ebenezer Baptist Church, tens of thousands listened outside on loudspeakers, and millions watched the proceedings on live television. The funeral procession itself drew around 100,000 people who joined as the casket was carried through the city streets.
The funeral is considered the largest ever staged for a private citizen in the United States at that time and was a major event with prominent civil rights leaders, politicians, public figures, and celebrities attending.
