The United States has a total of 14 territories. Out of these, five are permanently inhabited: American Samoa, Guam, Northern Mariana Islands, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. The remaining nine territories are mostly uninhabited minor islands and atolls largely located in the Pacific Ocean. Some sources mention 16 territories if including disputed claims such as Bajo Nuevo Bank and Serranilla Bank, but the commonly accepted number is 14 U.S. territories in total.
