The total death toll from the September 11, 2001 attacks was approximately 2,996 people , including the 19 hijackers. Of the victims, 2,606 died at the World Trade Center and surrounding area, 125 at the Pentagon, and 265 on the four planes involved in the attacks. Most of those who died were civilians, along with 343 firefighters, 72 law enforcement officers, and 55 military personnel. The attacks also affected people from more than 90 countries worldwide.
